Let me introduce myself, I’m Caroline Murray, Photographer, Graphic Designer and Educator

I graduated from TU Dublin, formerly DIT, with a BA (Hons) in Visual Communications in 2001 and have been teaching both photography and graphic design for many years at Ballyfermot College of Further Education. This has unequivocally informed the basis for my own visual practice as a photographer: working with students, helping them to effectively and creatively communicate their vision, is what I'm good at!

My journey to Personal Branding Photography has taken a few twists and turns! I’ve always loved portraiture and have idolised the work of documentary photographers such as Mary Ellen Mark, Nan Goldin and Diane Arbus. It’s the work of these women that inspired my passion for documentary and street photography. I spent many years attending rallies, protests or just wandering around the under belly of European cities with my 35mm camera.

Hours spent in the darkroom processing and developing film with art students was crucial for cultivating my love for the medium. The shift towards digital was a reluctant one, change is scary, but I was excited about the opportunity to explore and expand my creative repertoire.

Digital opened up a whole new world of professional experiences. Paul O’Connell, head of business development at Image Now, gave me my first break into unit and production stills. My first gig was working for ADARE productions in RTÉ, Raidió Teilifís Éireann, in 2018. I spent 15 hours ducking between the camera crew, production staff and a hysterical audience with my heavy Canon 70-200mm lens, trying desperately to capture an image that could be used to market the show. I still do this work from time to time, it’s energising (nerve racking) and most importantly, fun!

Piecing together my teaching experience and photography skills began when I subscribed to Sue Bryce Education on January 1st 2020. She’s a power house and an incredible mentor, the first thing I learnt was self-belief. Transforming my passion into a lucrative and enduring business was an essential part of my new year’s resolution, believing that I could do it was at the heart of my ambition.

Within a week of listening and learning, I had a name, Portrait Boss was born and I was hell bent on building this brand into something I could be proud of. I later explored individual coaching. Introducing Heike Delmore, she is my coach and mentor. Her industry expertise and general fierceness have been an inspiration!

The evolution of Portrait Boss is on-going, and I know that all entrepreneurs understand me when I say that brands are a breathing living thing that require a visionary expertise and a stomach for risk! My goal as a personal branding photographer is to help other brands to increase their impact and income with Personal Branding Photography, and transform their business into an empire!
